What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is an increasingly popular system of natural medicine, based on the principle that any substance that can cause illness can also be a cure. Two centuries old, its practice has enjoyed wide popularity among millions of individuals looking for safe and effective ways to treat illness and improve their health. For example, everyone knows that chopping an onion makes your eyes sting and water and your nose run and burn. A homeopathic preparation of Allium Cepa (red onion) may be used to cure patients with a cold or hay fever if they too have stinging, watery eyes and a runny, burning nose. How does Homeopathy differ from Conventional Medicine?
Conventional medicine seeks to control and often suppress the symptoms of a condition or illness. An example of this is the hay fever sufferer who is given an antihistamine to “artificially” dry up the runny nose and watery eyes. Now the symptoms are controlled, but unpleasant side effects may arise such as drowsiness and/or constipation. The symptoms themselves, have simply been suppressed in the body and often once the medication is halted, the symptoms return, and, at times, more severely.
Homeopathy is based on the principle of “like cures like” – that is, if a substance can cause symptoms of disease in a healthy person then it can cure a sick person suffering from similar symptoms. The homeopath regards symptoms as the body’s natural attempt to restore itself to balance. That is why a homeopath will choose a remedy that supports the body’s efforts to restore balance. With the correct homeopathic remedy, there are no side effects and a person is restored to health naturally. Homeopathy recognizes that each person manifests his/her disease in a unique and slightly different way. That is why two people with the same disease will not necessarily receive the same homeopathic remedy. Unlike the “one size fits all” approach, a homeopath chooses a remedy that matches the unique symptom profile of the individual.
For example, the daily use of drugs for asthma relieves the symptoms but does not cure the underlying problem. In Homeopathy, the treatment is directed at the underlying problem and the person needs just enough of the homeopathic remedy (medicine) to stimulate their healing response. Homeopathic treatment is not a “quick fix”, but rather a longer lasting treatment that stimulates a person’s immune system so that in time, the need for medicines is reduced or eliminated.
Homeopathy is also a preventative medicine which helps boost the immune system at a fraction of the cost of conventional drugs and supplements.
In his book, A New Earth – Awaikening to Your Life’s Purpose, Eckhart Tolle states that “According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, medical treatment is the third-leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer in the United States. Homeopathy and Chinese medicine are two examples of possible alternative approaches to disease that do not treat the illness as an enemy and therefore do not create new diseases.” (page 75).
Are Homeopathic remedies safe?
Because of the “micro” doses used in homeopathy, the remedies are non-toxic. They are completely safe for everyone including pregnant women, newborns, children, seniors and pets. All remedies come from natural sources such as plants and minerals and are diluted to such a small dose, so that they are safe and effective. What is Homeopathy’s history?
The principles of Homeopathy were formulated by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). Hahnemann found the conventional medical therapies of his time to be ineffective and harmful. He discovered with proper homeopathic principles a way to help patients heal without side effects. Homeopathy has a 200 year history of safety and effectiveness. What Happens during a Homeopathic consultation?
The first and second visit with a homeopath can last up to 3 hours in total. During this time, the homeopath will review the patient’s medical history and discuss all the patient’s symptoms – mental, emotional and physical. A homeopathic remedy will be chosen to match the patient’s symptom picture. Follow-up visits will vary depending on the condition, but usually only last 30-60 minutes. Consistency is extremely important at the beginning of treatment as they help the homeopath determine the effect of the homeopathic remedy as it stimulates the healing response.
